August 2023

Dear Angler & EFTTA friend,

We are all aware that recreational angling is Europe-wide under threats, with potential restrictions coming from various sides, whether ecological or political. If we do not react on these threats, recreational angling as we know it, might completely vanish.

Among all the regulations and laws that are constantly elaborated by the European Union, some have the potential to heavily affect the future of recreational angling. Since it is extremely difficult to amend an EU law once it has been ratified, it is crucial that harmful proposals are identified and addressed as early as possible before they become effective.

That is what EFTTA does for you.

As a recognized international non-profit association EFTTA has better access to the European decision-makers than individual persons or companies.

EFTTA is able to act on behalf of the entire Recreational Angling Industry.

With registered HQ in Brussels within walking distance of the European Institutions, we are in constant contact with the EU Commission, the EU Council & the EU Parliament, monitoring legislative activities within the EU Commission, meeting with MEPs, assuring that all relevant information about our industry and the angling community is brought to the decision makers. This task is very time- and resource demanding.

Lobbying & promotion are crucial to preserve recreational angling for the future.

All top players in the tackle trade industry have understood the importance of EFTTA's lobby work. All of them are on the EFTTA Board:

DAIWA, PURE FISHING, RAPALA VMC, RATHER OUTDOORS, SHIMANO.

But that is not enough.

The annual membership fees are the main source of income for EFTTA. To finance our lobby work we need the support of the entire Recreational Angling Industry. No matter how big or small your company is.

The industry must stand together. Only then can we be strong enough to successfully defend the interests of the tackle trade.

Supporting EFTTA is more important than ever.

That's why the EFTTA Board appeals urgently to all companies that are involved in or related to the recreational angling industry to stop profiting as a 'free-rider' from our commitment to promote and safeguard the future of recreational angling.

Show solidarity and protect your business.

Best wishes, we look forward to meeting you soon!

EU SUP Directive & Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)

EU’s single-use plastic Directive (the SUP Directive) from 2019 includes provisions for fishing gear and components of fishing gear containing plastic.

Yes, even if you can rightly claim that fishing gear are not single use products, the legislation explicitly concerns also non-single-use fishing gear.

Nature Restoration Law: Congratulations!

EFTTA greatly welcomes the positive outcome of the EU Parliament plenary vote on 12 July 2023 to adopt the Nature Restoration Law, which stipulates that restoration measures be implemented by 2030 covering at least 20% of all land and sea areas in the EU.

The objectives of the proposed law include the identification and removal of barriers that prevent the connectivity of surface waters, so that at least 25,000 km of rivers are restored to a free-flowing state by 2030.

EFTTA Lead Position 2023

On March 28, EFTTA met with four EU Commission officals working on the lead  restriction proposed by the ECHA.

EFTTA supports the proposal, but recommends fine-tuning to allow the industry to make timely adjustments in terms of  technology and product development. The EU Commission is now preparing a legally binding proposal based on ECHA’s text and ‘external input’ like the one from EFTTA.

Revised EU fisheries control regulation

The EU institutions have agreed that all recreational sea fishers shall be licensed or registered.

This important regulation will help to achieve more and better data about recreational angling in EU, and therefore to improve management of the fish resource. EFTTA has lobbied this proposal from the outset in 2018.

ProtectFish Project

One in three freshwater fish are threatened with extinction.

Therefore, a team of scientists will try to find answers to why and what can be done about this dramatical situation.

To do so, they have applied for 4 million Euros under the EU funding programme ‘Horizon’ to their project named ‘ProtectFish’.

Although the project is not yet approved, EFTTA strongly supports the scientific team to ensure that the project gets fair and objective evaluation.
