During this year's general assembly via VC on June 5, 2024, board member Gerard Bakkenes (Shimano) gave a comprehensive presentation on EFTTA's structure, projects and future strategy, which are based on the following 3 pillars: lobbying, advocacy & membership benefits.

Salmon crisis in Norway

Norway suspended salmon fishing in 33 of its main rivers at the weekend following evidence that the population of the species is crashing. This sudden action, which went into effect on June 23, has come at the height of the fishing season. Sweden is also experiencing similar problems and is expected to take similar action in some of its rivers.

EU Unitary Patent System

Since the entry into force of the EU Unitary Patent System in June 2023, more than 27,000 patents have been registered. The system simplifies the protection of companies' innovations by offering a one-stop shop for obtaining and enforcing patents in Europe.

Public consultation to evaluate CFP

The Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) will be evaluated during the coming months. The consultation aims to gather evidence and different perspectives on the CFP from a range of stakeholders, including individuals, the fisheries and the maritime sectors, non-governmental and other organisations, and national administrations from Member States.

Tender EU Fishing App

The European Commission has published the tender for the development of the EU Fishing App. This is in line with the Revised Fisheries Control Regulation which requires marine recreational fishers operating in EU territorial waters to register and declare catches through a certified app starting in 2026.

EU Nature Restoration Law finally adopted

After months of political discussion, the Council of Ministers of the EU finally gave the green light to the long anticipated Nature Restoration Lawn which is an important step forward in the fight for better nature and more biodiversity in Europe. Now, it requires concrete implementation.

Cormorant hearing

On June 28 a cormorant hearing took place in the German Bundestag. During the public hearing, it became clear, in contrast to previous hearings, that there are no longer any serious doubts that the current cormorant populations in Central Europe are causing lasting damage to fish stocks and are also threatening biodiversity in many regions.

EEA: circular system to reduce plastic waste

The European Environment Agency published a report on "The role of plastics in Europe's circular economy". Developing a circular economy is critical to making plastics more sustainable and is a central aim of the EU in its plastic strategy and recent legislation related to plastics.
