Markku has worked in a variety of roles within the Finnish fisheries sector for over 25 years, and for the past 9 years in diverse fisheries positions at Metsähallitus. Metsähallitus manages the state-owned water areas in Finland, overseeing about one-third of the country's water surface.
Development of fishing tourism has been promoted through projects such as "Big Experiences from the Fishing Waters of the North." These projects have provided a platform to experiment with operational models, the promotion of which has continued as part of regular governmental work. The experiences gained from these projects and governmental work have enabled strategic-level planning, with key milestones including participation in the working group of the fishing tourism development program.
A central focus of Markku’s work is Lapland, where tourism is rapidly developing and the need for measures supporting fishing tourism and increasing sustainability has been recognized.
