Consolidation, Growth, and Strategy to strengthen the Recreational Angling Industry

The EFTTA AISBL Annual General Assembly took place on 18 June 2025 as a virtual Zoom meeting, chaired by Gerard Bakkenes (Shimano Europe). With 27 voting members in attendance, the meeting provided a clear overview of EFTTA’s advocacy work, strategic direction, financial position, and growing membership base.

A highlight was the lobbying update presented by EFTTA lobbyists Jan Kappel and Aliénor, outlining nine EU policy priorities for 2024–2025. These included the proposed lead ban, EPR schemes for fishing tackle, recognition of sea anglers in EU legislation, and strengthening the economic case for recreational fishing.

This was followed by a strategic roadmap presented by Chair and Board Member Gerard Bakkenes, outlining how EFTTA managed to turn the tide after a challenging 2023 and confirming that the organisation remains firmly on track:

  • 2024 marked a year of recovery – with a renewed focus on advocacy, financial stability, and industry engagement, including the successful launch of the EFTTA Angling Summit.

  • 2025 is a year of consolidation – with stronger cooperation, growing membership, new partnerships (e.g. with the European Boating Industry), and preparations for the second Angling Summit in November.

  • 2026 is expected to be a year of growth – driven by expanded member benefits, socioeconomic data tools, and increased presence at European trade shows.

Financially, EFTTA reported a modest operational profit for 2024, reflecting the transition phase the organisation has been navigating. Nonetheless, the result marks a return to stability, and EFTTA is proud to report a solid outlook for 2025 – supported by increased income and reduced operating costs. This financial foundation will allow for targeted investments in advocacy, communication, event participation, and expanded services for members. The General Assembly unanimously approved the 2025 budget and discharged the Board for the 2024 financial year.

The open discussion addressed several pressing issues for the tackle trade and recreational angling sector:

  • A key topic was the growing impact of direct imports from platforms such as Temu and AliExpress, which are seen as undermining traditional retail and creating unfair competition. Participants supported the idea of EFTTA aligning with broader EU-level lobbying efforts already underway in other sectors to tackle the problem of unregulated low-cost imports.

  • Another area of concern was the implementation of the new EU General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR), which introduces stricter rules on product safety, labelling, and traceability. Members noted the risk of inconsistent enforcement across Member States and the need for clearer guidance. Suggestions included the use of digital tools such as QR codes to facilitate compliance and reduce administrative burden.

  • There was strong support for more regular updates on regulatory topics and for involving members more closely in advocacy work. The Board welcomed the input and confirmed plans to improve communication and encourage active member contributions moving forward.

In his closing remarks, Gerard Bakkenes thanked the members for their continued trust and reiterated the organisation’s long-term vision — ensuring recreational angling remains visible, valued, and viable in Europe.
