A Life of Passion, Innovation & Angling: remembering a visionary who revolutionized fishing tackle

Hubert Guillois, well-known for greatly influencing France’s fishing tackle industry in the ’70s and ’80s, has peacefully passed away at 84.

Hubert was born in Mauron on March 18, 1940. After graduating from L’École Hôtelière de Paris, he spent three exciting yet secretive years at the Pentagon, then traveled the world, often facing dangerous situations. Following his marriage to Dominique, he managed hotels in Africa and Argentina. Eventually, Hubert returned to France at the request of his father-in-law, André, to run Ragot Mouche—a business perfectly suited to his lifelong passion for angling.

In no time, Hubert transformed Ragot Mouche from a primarily fly-fishing & freshwater company into a significant import-export enterprise. He introduced esteemed brands like Rapala, Cortland, Plano, and Shimano to the French market, establishing himself as a prominent manufacturer. Among his many innovations was the iconic Raglou in 1971, followed by numerous creations developed in collaboration with Victor Borlandelli, Ange Porteux, Jean-Marc Lanchier, and others.

After selling Ragot Mouche to Rapala in 1991, Hubert and Dominique set off on new sailing adventures. Hubert, an experienced sailor since childhood, developed his skills around Bréhat island, a passion he treasured alongside fishing.

Deeply committed to teaching, Hubert loved sharing his extensive knowledge, particularly with younger generations. He recently published his memoirs, capturing his extraordinary life journey.

Hubert cared deeply about the environment, the future of angling, well-being on the water, and inspiring young people. His final written words were, “Freedom at sea is a marvellous feeling.”

Today, his daughter Marianne and son-in-law Ross Honey (EFTTA Board Member) continue Hubert’s legacy through the FreeSpirit initiative, promoting sustainable boating, environmental awareness, youth involvement, and recreational angling.
