The European Commission is preparing an evaluation report on the rules on single-use plastics and fishing gear, scheduled for publication in 2027. As part of this process, a “call for evidence” will be launched within the next months, followed by a "public consultation" in the fourth quarter of this year.
Single-use plastic products and fishing gear containing plastic are a major source of marine litter, threatening marine ecosystems, biodiversity and human health. This litter harms activities such as tourism, fisheries and shipping. The 2019 Single-Use Plastics Directive (the 'SUP Directive) aims to prevent this waste and reduce its impact on the marine environment.
The European Commission's consultation seeks feedback from stakeholders, including fishers, industry representatives, environmental organizations, and the general public, to assess the effectiveness of the current rules and explore potential improvements.
EFTTA will closely monitor this issue and will be prepared to contribute as soon as the call for evidence and the public consultation are open. Our input will contribute to protecting marine ecosystems while considering economic and practical considerations.
To our members and everyone who wants to protect the environment and our oceans, we say: stay tuned and get involved! Share your views and help shape the future of sustainable plastic and fishing gear management in the EU!
